What is Google AdWords?

With Google AdWords, you can create and run ads for your business, quickly and simply. Run your ads on Google and it's advertising network -- no matter what your budget, you'll only pay when people click your ads.

AdWords ads are displayed along with search results when someone searches Google using one of your keywords. Ads appear under 'Sponsored links' in the side column of a search page, and may also appear in additional positions above the free search results. That way, you'll be advertising to an audience that's already interested in your business. You can also choose to display your ads on Display Network sites in the growing Google Network. And, you can choose the exact Display Network placements where you'd like your ad to appear, or you can let contextual targeting match your keywords to content.

You can choose from a variety of ad formats, including text, image, and video ads, and easily track your ad performance using the reports available in your account.

There's no minimum monthly charge with Google AdWords -- just a nominal activation fee to cover Google's activation costs and our consultancy and design costs for your first campaign or ongoing campaigns.

How much does AdWords cost?

Your costs depend on your business location and how many customers you're trying to reach.

After a consultancy review you'll see that you can spend as much or as little as you'd like.

Here are a few basic things to consider when trying to assess the cost of your AdWords campaign.

Set your budget

  • There's no minimum spending requirement--just a nominal, one-time activation fee from Google.
  • You set the limit on how much you're willing to spend each day.
  • You specify how much you're willing to pay per click or per impression.

 Pay only for results

  • Choose to pay only for clicks on your ads (with cost-per-click bidding) or only for impressions your ads receive (with cost-per-thousand-impressions bidding).

What's the lowest amount I can pay per click?

If your ad appears on Google or the Search Network, the answer depends on each keyword's Quality Score, which is determined by clickthrough rate, relevance to the search query, account history, and other relevance factors. The better your Quality Score, the lower your cost-per-clicks (CPCs). In some cases, you can even pay as little as your currency's smallest denomination. So you should aim for the highest quality keywords, ads, and campaigns possible to drive down your advertising costs.

If your ad appears on the Display Network, the answer also depends on the overall Quality Score of your ads, which is based on each ad's clickthrough rate and the quality of your landing page. In some instances you may pay as little as £0.01.
